Thank You, Kyoto Animation

July 19, 2019

It is absolutely heartbreaking that the worst tragedy in postwar Japanese history had to happen to one of the best studios in the anime industry.

I just cannot even begin to say how much influence and impact Kyoto Animation has had on my life. Kyoto Animation’s works (Lucky Star, Haruhi, K-ON!, etc…) were my foundational anime and they were what convinced me to start on the path that I’m now on. It is no understatement to say that I would not be who I am today if it were not for these shows. These shows taught me the importance of friendship. These shows taught me the beauty of love. These shows taught me the value of life.

It is because of these shows that I met so many wonderful people, gained so many amazing experiences and grew as a person. While art can always be redrawn, the people creating that art cannot be brought back to life. It pains me to no end to think that someone may not have the opportunity to have their lives changed by Kyoto Animation the way mine was because of this atrocity. The debt that I owe Kyoto Animation cannot be repaid. The only thing I can do is to offer up my humble words of gratitude and condolence as a fan, an admirer and a supporter of the many amazing productions that the studio has produced.

I still cannot fathom how the people who brought so much joy and laughter to millions were the ones to have their lives cut short. My heart goes to the loved ones of those who have sadly lost their lives and of those who were injured in the fire. Our pain must be infinitesimal compared to the pain that they must be going through. My thoughts and prayers are with them. Please know that their lives were not spent in vain.

Bad things happen to good people. I thought that that was an immutable fact of life that I have grown accustomed to. But it is times like these where I am reminded about how cruel reality can really be. However, it is during times like these that I am also reminded about the strength of our community and its ability to come together in times of crisis. To those who have offered up their time, effort and support to those in need, I offer a sincere and heartfelt “thank you”. You are the reason I am proud to call myself an anime fan.

Translated Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku Page 93

July 16, 2013

When the last episode of Miyakawa-ke aired, I was disappointed that they decided to animate chapter 10 instead of skipping ahead to the later chapters. This is because they missed out on a very poignant scene between the two sisters that revealed quite a bit of Hinata’s back story.

I truly think that fans are missing out so, once again, I took the liberty of translating and typesetting the two strips in question. This took quite awhile, so I hope you guys enjoy it. (^.^)

I guess this would count as a spoiler if they ever decide to make any more Miyakawa-ke anime. But since chances are slim, I say, read away!

Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku Episode 10 (Final) Released!

“A series about happiness and mutual understanding, despite being poor.”

…and yes, you didn’t read the title wrongly, this is indeed the final episode. In a blink of an eye, it’s over. We’re sad too, but as they say, all good things must come to end. Having read the entirety of the manga, I’m kind of saddened that they decided to go ahead with adapting chapter 10, instead of jumping to some of the later chapters with some really touching and funny moments with the two sisters and their back-stories. Nonetheless, for what it was, it was an absolute blast! Especially for a huge Lucky Star fan like myself, having the window to the Lucky Star world opened once more in anime form after 6 years was a phenomenal experience.

Anyways, speaking of phenomenal experiences, I personally had a whale of a time translating this show. It was not only great practice, it was also exceedingly rewarding, enriching and, most importantly, fun.

Let’s see what my other team members from Miya-K subs have to say:

CCharmanderK (QC/Timer): Wow, what a ride this has been. Prior to doing MKNK, I didn’t think much about how much work subtitling actually is. While indeed challenging, it’s fun to work on something you love. And I loved MKNK; if there isn’t any more Lucky Star-based animation from here on in, I’m happy knowing that we at least had MKNK to serve as closure. Perfect? No. But it certainly did give me something to be excited for every week.

steenuil (Typesetter): I’m glad I worked on Miyakawa since nobody else would probably have, but I suppose I’ll keep to my scanlations from now on. Schedules? Not even once. Anyway, where the hell is the bloody OP? Was it all just a ruse? Are they fucking with us like they did with the video quality? We’ll probably never know.

Hats off to these two amazing people, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Special thanks to RTM for his assistance when we were getting off the ground, FFFpeeps for correcting our mistake in Episode 7, volta_john for transcribing the ending song lyrics before the official lyrics came out and last but not least, YOU. Thanks to you guys, the fans of Lucky Star and our supporters.

See you next time when we release the DVD version of the show in October! (^o^)

In this episode, they are talking about Nounai Maker (literally ‘Inside Brain Maker’):

It is a website program that ‘reveals’ the contents of your mind depending on the name you enter. Feel free to try it for yourselves by entering your names. Though, you’ll need to be able to check the Kanji to figure out what it actually says. (^.^;)

Enter Hikage’s name and you’ll get the same result as in the anime. (^o^)

As a minor acquisitions update, this week, I went out of my way to purchase a Miku Tony Version figure because Hinata has one. Yes, I’m that hopeless.
