Heartcatch Precure Theme Week

June 10, 2011

Throughout this entire week, we’ll be taking a look at a different role play toy from the series HeartCatch Precure! I know that the series has been over for awhile, but I think that Heartcatch deserves it as it is definitely one of the best series that the franchise has to offer and one of my personal favorite, alongside the original and Yes! Precure 5.

For the uninitiated, Precure or Pretty Cure is a franchise of Magical Girl Anime not unlike Sailormoon, Nanoha, Cardcaptor Sakura and many others. Heartcatch was last year’s Precure series with the current one being Suite Precure.

For those who are turned away because of the ‘girly’ appearance of the series, don’t be. Heartcatch does a phenomenal job with its character development and interactions, action sequences, comedy and plot.

The artstyle is quite a departure from the other precure series as it’s more simplistic and cartoony but again, don’t let that turn you away. In fact, if the character designs seem familiar, Yoshihiko Umakoshi also did the character designs for Casshern Sins and also worked on a ton of other Anime. While I did find them somewhat Strange in the beginning. I am now completely in love with them. I think that the simplistic artstyle makes for more expressive characters and more fluid and brilliantly choreographed fight sequences.

Not to mention, it has been subbed by none other than TV-Nihon, who is renown for subbing the various Kamen Rider and Sentai series. Even if you don’t like the more traditional magical girl anime, I highly suggest you give this series a try.

Now, the reason I’m reviewing these so late is because I was kind of on the fence about these. I love the show to death, but was kind of hesitant on buying into the toys. But then, I saw an auction for the entire set of toys and caved in. And boy am I glad I did, because as role play/replica toys, these a brilliant job of what they are supposed to do and are actually really fun as you shall soon see.

And as to why I’m doing the reviews, there are already a number of videos out there showing off most of the features, but don’t really explain them in detail nor are they in English.

Some notes about the upcoming videos. They are meant to be watched in order, meaning to say that some things that I’ve explained in the earlier videos will not be repeated in the later ones. Also, with regards to translaitons, I shall be subtitling whatever the toys say in English instead of doing a live translation. I think this is far more efficient and helps to save time. And of course, there will be spoilers, especially regarding the identities of the latter two Precures.

Videos after the jump~

Review: 1/7 Scale Fate Testarossa ~Phantom Minds~ by Alter

February 19, 2011

We have well established figure producers like GSC, Max Factory, Kotobukiya, Wave, Freeing and Megahouse that always churn out quality products. Then we have Alter. I don’t think many would disagree with me when I say that Alter is definitely one of the best, or if not the best, figure maker at this point in time. What can I say? Alter’s figures are definitely a league above all other brands. Their figures are consistently excellent, utilizing one of the best feeling materials, having quality paint jobs, gorgeous poses and intricate sculpts. This usually yields a figure that any collector would be proud to own and proud to have displayed on his shelf.

Now, why am I singing such high praise of Alter from the get go? Well, that’s because it’s true.

…and also because I’ve been completely smitten by their latest offering in their Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha figure line, their 1/7 Scale Fate Testarossa figure.

Same Voice, Different Character and Vice Versa

January 7, 2011

Now, as there are very few good voice talents out there, it is natural that some voice actors are reused. There are cases where they are able to change their voice so much that they sound completely different, but still deliver perfect dialogue.

Actar’s Reviews 180 – Fate Testarossa Voice Clock Showcase and Translation

December 27, 2010

Let me introduce to you the Talking Alarm Clock. Not really something that is commonly talked about or easily obtainable, Talking Alarm Clocks are precisely what they are. Alarm Clocks with alarms that are specially recorded lines of Anime characters by their respective voice actors. These phrases are usually along the lines of trying to wake someone up as we shall soon see.

I’ve been wanting to get one of these for quite awhile, partly out of curiosity and partly due to the novelty factor. However, as far as I know, such clocks aren’t usually readily available at regular online stores. I’ve never seen the Haruhi, Railgun or Bamboo Blade ones up for sale and yet they exist. I suppose they were event or online store exclusives or something to that effect.

However, the clock that I have infront of me can indeed be purchased from any online hobby store. They are tie ins with the Nanoha movie that feature the voices of both Nanoha and Fate, who are voiced by Tamura Yukara and Mizuki Nana respectively.

This one is the Fate Version that has 4 different alarms. The first three are all voiced by Fate, but the last one is by both Nanoha and Fate. While the Nanoha clock has 3 lines voiced by Nanoha and one voiced by both of them.

This is my first attempt at translating, hopefully I’ve done the lines justice. (^.^;)

All these questions and more shall be answered in this review!

A House for my Daughter

December 1, 2010

Well, there’s the phrase “People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. Here, my new version of this phrase is “Magical Girls who live in acrylic cases shouldn’t wield gigantic magical intelligent axes”.

Anyways, joking aside, I have finally completed my doll case for Feito~chan. The base and stand comes from the set recommended to me by SleeplessOtaku. However, I didn’t really like the flimsy plastic case and decided to get one custom made. Thanks to my friend for getting this done for me within a week. (^.^) Nice huh?

Also, I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the cape looking decent. How does it look?

CDP: Creating My Dream Sakura Doll

November 18, 2010

Being a self-proclaimed die-hard fan of the series Cardcaptor Sakura and the titular heroine, Kinomoto Sakura, I have been simply distraught over the fact that up to this date, no ‘good’ figure of Sakura has been released. From what I’ve gathered after prowling through auction sites and CCS Fan Sites, the only completed PVC figures of Sakura were all lower quality prize figures or trading figures. As for dolls/action figures, Bandai has released an entire plethora of ‘Bendy Dolls’ in their old ‘Free Pose Selection” range.

The main bodies of these dolls are made of a bendy plastic/rubber type material. While they do look good in some poses while appearing seamless, they look awkward in others and are a chore to pose.

What is one to do in this situation?
